He notes that &#8220;the very first catalog of SPU (then, Seattle Seminary), from 1893-94, says, &#8220;We believe in teaching for the future. Education for Character will be our constant motto.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<div data-wp-interactive=\"core\/file\" class=\"wp-block-file\"><object data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!state.hasPdfPreview\" hidden class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/scholars.spu.edu\/spufacultyaction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2022\/07\/SPU-Vision-2015-Response.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:400px\" aria-label=\"Embed of Embed of SPU-Vision-2015-Response..\"><\/object><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-3a03bdfd-0f4f-4cc6-bd46-db5d4abfa995\" href=\"https:\/\/scholars.spu.edu\/spufacultyaction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2022\/07\/SPU-Vision-2015-Response.pdf\">SPU-Vision-2015-Response<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-purple-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\" id=\"mission2013\">2013 Mission Statement, Signature Commitments, and Vision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Seattle Pacific University is a Christian university fully committed to engaging the culture and changing the world by graduating people of competence and character, becoming people of wisdom, and modeling grace-filled community.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">During Dan Martin&#8217;s presidency, the mission statement was slightly edited (removing the phrase &#8220;seeks to be a premier&#8221;) and it was further supported by four &#8220;signature commitments&#8221; stressing academic rigor, theological literacy, multicultural competency, and character formation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<div data-wp-interactive=\"core\/file\" class=\"wp-block-file\"><object data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!state.hasPdfPreview\" hidden class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/scholars.spu.edu\/spufacultyaction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2022\/07\/SPU-Mission-Signature-Commitments-and-Vision-2013.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:400px\" aria-label=\"Embed of Embed of SPU-Mission-Signature-Commitments-and-Vision-2013..\"><\/object><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-613b86db-38f9-4691-b021-8053faba6c50\" href=\"https:\/\/scholars.spu.edu\/spufacultyaction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2022\/07\/SPU-Mission-Signature-Commitments-and-Vision-2013.pdf\">SPU-Mission-Signature-Commitments-and-Vision-2013<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-purple-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\" id=\"mission2002\">2002 Mission Statement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Seattle Pacific University seeks to be a premier Christian university fully committed to engaging the culture and changing the world by graduating people of competence and character, becoming people of wisdom, and modeling grace-filled community.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">At their May 2002 meeting, the Board of Trustees adopted a new mission statement that &#8220;calls SPU to be grounded in faith and open to the world.&#8221; In this article from SPU&#8217;s magazine <em>Response<\/em>, President Eaton says that &#8220;we will seek to be faithful and obedient to God&#8217;s call for this place and this time. . . . we must always remember that a calling has a context. We seek to understand this place and this time very well, so that we may shine the light of the gospel more effectively.&#8221; To underscore the vision expressed by the new mission statement, Eaton alludes to Isaiah 54:2: &#8220;enlarge the site of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes.&#8221; He notes that &#8220;our stakes&#8230;anchor us to our Christian roots, our history and our faith. But we are called as well to be radically open to the world around us.&#8221;  Two years later in his remarks about the <a href=\"https:\/\/scholars.spu.edu\/spufacultyaction\/spu-statement-of-faith\/#sof2004\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/scholars.spu.edu\/spufacultyaction\/spu-statement-of-faith\/#sof2004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new Statement of Faith<\/a>, he said he &#8220;argued hard&#8221; to keep the meaning of &#8220;Christian&#8221; in the mission statement &#8220;left open,&#8221; believing &#8220;this will serve us well with the various and broader constituencies with whom we engage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<div data-wp-interactive=\"core\/file\" class=\"wp-block-file\"><object data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!state.hasPdfPreview\" hidden class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/scholars.spu.edu\/spufacultyaction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2022\/07\/SPU-Mission-Statement-2002-Debut.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:400px\" aria-label=\"Embed of Embed of SPU-Mission-Statement-2002-Debut..\"><\/object><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-3efa70b8-7ccd-4ae3-96c0-d156c4689b7e\" href=\"https:\/\/scholars.spu.edu\/spufacultyaction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2022\/07\/SPU-Mission-Statement-2002-Debut.pdf\">SPU-Mission-Statement-2002-Debut<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-purple-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\" id=\"1993missionstatement\">1993 Mission Statement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">During Curtin Martin&#8217;s presidency (1991-94), SPU&#8217;s mission statement in the Undergraduate Catalog was set apart from the &#8220;Defining Christian Mission&#8221; section and read as follows: &#8220;As a community of learners, Seattle Pacific University seeks to educate and prepare students for service and leadership. We are committed to evangelical Christian faith and values, and to the excellence in teaching and scholarship for the intellectual, personal and spiritual growth of students&#8221; (p. 2). The catalog also listed the 11 goals for students, but without the explanation for each one developed in previous catalogs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<div data-wp-interactive=\"core\/file\" class=\"wp-block-file\"><object data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!state.hasPdfPreview\" hidden class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/scholars.spu.edu\/spufacultyaction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2022\/09\/SPU-UG-Catalog-1993-94.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:400px\" aria-label=\"Embed of Embed of SPU-UG-Catalog-1993-94..\"><\/object><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-63ff7df7-97b5-44d3-9be9-ff1d2be3cbd2\" href=\"https:\/\/scholars.spu.edu\/spufacultyaction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2022\/09\/SPU-UG-Catalog-1993-94.pdf\">SPU-UG-Catalog-1993-94<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-purple-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\" id=\"scholarsandservants1989\">&#8220;Becoming Scholars and Servants&#8221; (1989)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">During David LaShana&#8217;s presidency (1982-91), there was no mission statement separate from the six tenets of faith listed in the &#8220;Defining Our Christian Mission&#8221; section.
