{"id":639,"date":"2016-06-03T14:57:44","date_gmt":"2016-06-03T21:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/digitalobby.spu.edu\/writingprogram\/?page_id=639"},"modified":"2021-05-13T18:37:39","modified_gmt":"2021-05-13T18:37:39","slug":"w-courses","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/scholars.spu.edu\/spuwriting\/w-courses\/","title":{"rendered":"W Courses"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Graduation Requirements<\/h4>\n<p>Writing\u00a0(W)\u00a0courses (typically 3000- and 4000-level) build upon your earlier work in WRI 1000 and WRI\u00a01100 by providing instruction in the technical and stylistic requirements of writing appropriate to a particular discipline.<\/p>\n<p>For current W courses offered, please refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/spu.edu\/undergraduate-time-schedule\/subjects\/ATTR?attr=W\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Course Catalog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Students entering SPU with freshman or sophomore standing<\/strong>\u00a0are required to complete 8 credits in writing (\u201cW\u201d) courses prior to graduation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Students entering as a junior<\/strong>\u00a0are required to complete 5 credits in writing (\u201cW\u201d) courses prior to graduation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Students entering as a senior<\/strong>\u00a0are required to complete 3 credits in writing (\u201cW\u201d) courses prior to graduation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4>W Course Standards<\/h4>\n<p>To be a W course, courses must<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u2013\u2013include one outcome on the syllabus related to writing<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u2013\u2013identify itself as a W on the course syllabus<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u2013\u2013include revision as a substantial component of the course, as reflected by the course calendar<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u2013\u2013meet the following disciplinary-specific page requirements. Note: an\u00a0<em>assignment\u00a0<\/em>here can be a wide range of tasks: a research proposal, a literature review, an annotated bibliography, a research paper, a cover letter, a memo, a resume, a technical report, a specs sheet, a short story, an artist&#8217;s statement, a grant application, etc.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>ARTS<\/strong> (Art, Music Theatre)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-size: inherit\"><em>5- credit course<\/em>: at least 4 assignments totaling together at least 8 revised pages (2,000 words), with extensive revision throughout the quarter<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>3-credit course<\/em>: at least 3 assignments totaling together at least 6 revised pages (1,500 words), with extensive revision throughout the quarter<\/p>\n<p><strong>STEM<\/strong>: (Biology, Chemistry, Engineering &amp; Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Food &amp; Nutritional Sciences, Mechanical &amp; General Engineering, Math, Physics, Health Sciences, Nursing)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>5-credit course<\/em>: at least 3 assignments totaling together at least 12 revised pages (3,000 words;
