Having a thesis is different than making a claim in that a thesis is declarative, the be all end all to the information it is responding to. A thesis does not enter in to the argument, but it shuts off potential for further conversation, it provides a “correct answer” answer rather than responding with a possibility. Making a claim takes a stance and responds to a discussion in a way that allows room for counter claims and differences in opinion.  During my usual writing process, I like to state my argument as if it is the correct answer, the only plausible interpretation, not acknowledging that another conclusion might be logical.  Formulating a complex argument was never a habitual problem in my writing, the problem, was instead, not referencing multiple opinions.    In the future, I will keep in mind that addressing a counter claim does not weaken my own, but it adds complexity and invites more people to share in the topic that needs further exploring.
