On June 12, 2022, at SPU’s graduation ceremony in the Tacoma Dome, about 50 students protest the Board’s decision by handing Interim President Menjares a pride flag in lieu of shaking his hand as they receive their diplomas. One student organizer declares that “We’re not going to stop until the policy changes.” The students post a video montage of the flag protest on TikTok, which eventually gains national attention.
